Altan to headline Iúr Cinn Fleadh

Trad Irish folk legends Altan will perform in Newry for the first time ever when they headline this year’s Iúr Cinn Fleadh on 25 August. And tickets have just gone on sale here!

Known for their dynamic performances and deep-rooted connection to Donegal, Altan are set to fill Newry Town Hall with the rich musical heritage of their native landscape.

ISLAND ANGEL

Altan emerged from the musical and emotional connection between Belfast born flute player Frankie Kennedy and fiddler and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. The couple met in the 70s during a visit to the Gaoth Dobhair Gaeltacht and married in 1981. They embarked not only on a life together but also on an epic journey to bring Donegal music to the world.

Tragically, Frankie Kennedy died from cancer in 1994. That loss was felt across the Irish music scene, but his legacy lives on with Altan – who continue to record as well as tour extensively.

Their 1993 release Island Angel was recognised by Billboard World Music Charts as the second biggest selling world music album globally in 1994. They collaborated with Dolly Parton on her 2001 album Little Sparrow, and have played for Irish and American presidents.

Currently the band is made up of Mairéad, Ciaran Curran, Mark Kelly, Dáithí Sproule, Máirtín Tourish and Clare Friel. Earlier this year they released the album Donegal, the most deliberate and dynamic reference to their home county. The recording is full of the life and colour of their homeland, from haunting ballads to lively jigs and reels.

Joining Altan at Newry Town Hall is esteemed local musician and singer Piaras Ó Lorcáin, whose youthful yet mature artistry will add an extra layer of enchantment. The event will be seated, ensuring all attendees can immerse themselves in a rich experience of Irish trad.

MAGICAL NIGHT

Doors will open at 7:30pm. Tickets are expected to sell quickly, so festivalgoers are urged to secure their seat early for what will be a magical night, which is hosted by Narrow Water Promotions in conjunction with Iúr Cinn Fleadh.

Well established as a citywide festival for Newry, Iúr Cinn Fleadh takes place from 22-26 August, offering something for everyone. Among the many and varied Bank Holiday activities will be the famous Trad Cruise, Trad Trail, concerts, children’s events, Newry Water Festival, flotilla of boats, food tour, Dancing On The Greens, Bikes and Beats and much more. Altan tickets are available here.
